BANKS COUNTY, Ga. — The Banks County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay vigilant after receiving multiple reports of romance scams targeting people in the community.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers are creating fake online identities — often posing as individuals working overseas or serving in the military — to build trust and develop what appears to be a romantic relationship.

Once the emotional connection is established, the scammer typically begins asking for money, citing fabricated emergencies, travel needs, or investment opportunities.

Authorities highlighted several common red flags, including refusing to meet in person or video chat, professing love unusually quickly, requesting money or gift cards, and sharing stories or photos that seem inconsistent or overly polished.

Residents are encouraged to take steps to protect themselves, such as avoiding sending money or sensitive information to anyone they haven’t met in person, using reverse image searches to verify profile photos, and discussing the situation with a trusted friend or family member before sending funds.

Suspicious profiles should be reported both to the platform where they appear and to law enforcement. Anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to a romance scam is urged to contact the Banks County Sheriff’s Office.
